Curriculum

Our philosophy of teaching focuses on building not only technical strength and artistic excellence but also confidence and self-esteem. In addition to the professional experience and diverse backgrounds of our faculty, our curriculum incorporates elements from the techniques of Al Gilbert, USA Gymnastics, and the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum™ syllabus.  Class placement is by the staff.

 

Dance Into (ages 2.5-4)


In this class, children explore movement through music, develop physical skills, channel energy, and stimulate imagination and creativity, whle learning how to work together within a classroom environment like taking turns and following new instruction.  They also have a lot of fun working with props, leaping like frogs and swirling like the wind.  Parents of this class are asked to remain on the premise during class times.

-Incorporates ballet and acros dance styles.

 

Primary (ages 3-4)

In this level, classes are designed to allow children to explore movement through music, develop physical skills, channel energy, and stimulate imagination and creativity, while learning how to work together within a classroom environment like taking turns and following new instruction.  They also have a lot of fun working with props, leaping like frogs and swirling like the wind.  Parents of this level are asked to remain on the premise during class times.

Minis (ages 5-7)

Designed for kids who want to learn how to dance in a fun setting.  These classes increase strength, flexibility, rhythm and mobility.  In this level, students can choose one or two weekly classes in different disciplines.

Petite (ages 7-9)

In this level we teach technique and terminology.  For intermediate students, the emphasis for each class is to learn good clean technique, improve strength and flexibility, and build a vocabulary of steps.  Students are expected to work hard and challenge themselves to improve.  We offer a variety of dance levels and styles for this level and encourage enrolling in multiple disciplines for well roundness and performing opportunities.

-Jazz/Contemporary (must be enrolled in a ballet class)

-Tap

-Hip Hop

-Acro (must be enrolled in ballet)

 

Juniors (ages 9&up)

In this level, students are introduced to new skills in a manner appropriate to their physical, mental, and emotional development. Our program provides a strong foundation in classical ballet technique and overall dance education.  Students may begin preparing for partnering work and female students for pointe.  These students have the opportunity to audition to be members of the Woodbridge Dance Company, our resident company, which gives students valuable stage experience in a professional setting.

Teens (ages 13-18)

These dancers have an integrated curriculum of classes spanning to several years of training in various styles.  Dancers in this level may train several hours a week in multiple disciplines and are ancouraged to both audition and perform for experience.  Many of our students have gone on to college dance programs at VCU, GMU, Shenandoah University and/or pursued other dance and theatre related career paths like The Joffry Ballet.  These dancers are also mentored as they explore in choreography and assist in teaching classes.
